A man with a single-minded intensity and passion for his craft, George Makrakis has been at the heart of the Athenian underground music scene for a number of years. George’s pedigree within the genre of techno is pure thoroughbred as his music has always been vital and relevant since his early gigs at some of Greece’s most distinguished venues such as Luv, Danza, Kalua, Miroir and Zoo, only to give rise to an established reputation and a luminary Dj. Focusing his efforts on his own moniker, George Makrakis has become a force to be reckoned with since early age. Involved in music as well as his local club scene from a tender age, performances at a variety of gigs and underground parties ultimately led to performances alongside A.Paul and Raul Mezcolanza, laying the foundation for future success. A broad array of studies in the music industry provided a platform to go on and score on his own production material, and thus flourish in both the live and studio environments. With music playing a fundamental role in George’s formative years, time spent honing his skills as a classical piano player, have stood the Greek dj and producer in good stead for a career that has launched him into a high stage through performances and production work. Learning multiple production techniques through countless hours of lessons, gave him the inspiration and understanding to go beyond the work of his musical heroes. After many years of silence, it is his 2014’s debut that best showcases his talent and trademark sound, seeing his work united with a host of high profile Greek clubs such as Maze, Loft, The Apartment and Skull. The release of his own imprint, Liquify, on September 2015 is another notable career highlight, celebrating yet another landmark moment - a label of quality and distinction in an ever-shifting world of music. LIQUIFY A man with a rich, music-listening heritage, George Makrakis’ prowess with music in his early years, ultimately led to a deft side-step to turntables, once techno hit the Athenian music scene. A desire to produce the music that flowed from his decks quickly led to the debut of his first imprint “Liquify”, a label that ensures to push the techno music boundaries even further with a unique blend of rhythm and melody. The label itself is a huge advocate of the whole idea of creating a unique world for exploring the techno sounds in depth, and that music is purposefully flexible and constantly evolving.  With music playing a fundamental role, Liquify is definitely a music-defining imprint, ready to emerge and spread its generous wings.

Uplifting Only

21:00Tuesday

21:00Tuesday

Harpaul Alberto Kohli (better known as Ori Uplift) — the owner and CEO of Abora Recordings and host of the weekly Uplifting Only radio podcast on DI.fm, iTunes, & Spotify — was born in Washington, DC, in 1980, to a father from India and a mother from Ecuador.  In 2010 he started up a trance project called Trance Tehillim. In part through that he became friends with the then-owner of Abora Recordings, who ended up giving him the entire Abora label in the summer of 2012. Ori took over and became owner and CEO. Upon taking over ownership, Ori’s goal was to grow the orchestral/emotional uplifting genre, create another scene for it outside the club world, and bring it to a large and growing audience across the globe. He focused on recruiting talented staff, finding orchestral uplifting artists with much potential, and to have the staff and 'talent coaches' help develop the artists’ skills so that they could become top producers. Since then, Abora has blossomed into the world's top label for orchestral emotional uplifting trance, and has sprouted successful sublabels in many other trance genres, now totaling 13 labels/sublabels, including Edge EDM, Driftmoon Audio, Silent Shore Records, Levitated Music, and more. It was rated the world’s #8 trance label in the Trance Podium 2014 Awards and was listed as one of the 6 best trance labels by Trance for Infinity. Abora has enjoyed success in the broader EDM music world too: Since 2012, Abora has won the Future Favorite on Armin van Buuren's A State of Trance 13 times, more than any label except Armin's Armada itself. Meanwhile, Ori’s weekly Uplifting Only radio podcast, which aims to be the definitive and leading show for the orchestral uplifting genre, has developed a devoted and passionate fan base. Further, Uplifting Only was rated the #8 "Best Radioshow/Podcast/Cloudcast" in the Trance Podium 2014 Awards, and was ranked one of the top five trance podcasts for working out by Trance Hub (ranking first for yoga and pilates). Ori’s success has now started extending to live gigs: He has closed for Aly & Fila, has performed with vocalists Caro Sosa and Erika Faries, and was the “Main Headliner” at the 2015 Trancervatory festival in Ecuador. Ori has also ranked well on the Beatport charts. Two of his mixcompilations based on his Uplifting Only show reached the #1 spot on the Beatport release charts (trance and chillout), and two more have reached #2 on the trance charts. A total of 7 of his mixcomps or mixes have reached the top 5 on the Beatport charts. It’s no surprise that Trance Hub named him one of six "Artists to watchout for". You'll be seeing more and more of him as he focuses on uplifting the general public with beautiful euphoric uplifting melodies and sounds!

22:00Wednesday

After 6 years, 315 podcasts and over 150 contributing artists, the much loved and internationally renowned CLR podcast comes to an end. The podcast has provided a musical platform for established and fledgling artists alike to share their music with hundreds of thousands of listeners, whilst also giving Chris a chance to connect with techno fans around the world and provide an insight into the hearts and minds of the artists pushing the boundaries of techno music today. But the end of one era only means the start of another, and this is not the end for Chris Liebing’s weekly broadcast. The techno stalwart presents a new show 'AM/FM’ - a chance for Chris to share his personal sounds and experiences from clubs, festivals, terraces and beaches around the world. Chris explains: This show is all about the music in the moment it was played. It kind of functions like an audible dj diary. The idea behind it is that I choose a recent set that I played and deliver it to you unedited, raw and direct, in 60 minutes pieces on a weekly basis. For example, if I play a three hours set somewhere, it will be divided in three 60 minutes long AM/FM shows, so after three weeks you will have the full set. You could even put them into a playlist and listen to the whole set with seamless transitions. I try to keep the commentaries to a minimum, so that you get a maximum amount of music. Still, I want to mention certain things during the show, but beyond that, I will provide additional info in form of a written set report, which can be found on www.chrisliebing.com or on my facebook-site.

What do you get if you take the offspring of a Dutch woman and a (literally) revolutionary Chilean musician and steep him in the musical climate of Belgian techno in his formative years? Ramon Tapia was the result of this rather unique combination of circumstances, a producer whose eclectic past and upbringing combined to create one of the freshest sounds in techno music of recent years. Ramon was born and raised in Holland, and followed in his father’s footsteps in his teenage years when he began producing. His mother met his father some years after he escaped from Pinochet’s Chile, where his own music had incensed the military government and made him a cultural dissident. Ramon’s youth was thankfully not as turbulent nor dangerous, with the young talent brought up on a musical diet that was incendiary in its own way: Michael Jackson, Quincy Jones, Kraftwerk, Front 242, and the early pioneers of Detroit techno. His two older sisters played a key part in his musical formation, sparking his imagination with tales of dance floor epiphanies upon their return from clubs of the country’s heyday. Once bitten by the techno bug, Ramon moved to Belgium’s scene capital, Antwerp, to study as a jeweler and diamond cutter. It was a part-time job in a record shop that helped to decide his destiny, however. He began producing tracks with a colleague, and slowly learned to produce solo. After a fruitful period producing much tougher techno, a resurgent Ramon Tapia began to find fame under his new moniker in the late 2000s on labels like Herzblut, Craft and Yellow Tail, forging a new school techno sound that blended the slower, sexier sounds of the contemporary vibe with his schooling in the genre from the past few decades. In 2010 he mixed a compilation for New York’s legendary Strictly Rhythm, plundering their back catalogue for a full mix of new interpretations by him and various collaborators. This marked the biggest turning point in his career, catapulting him onto the world stage. “It was a great opportunity and made me grow in a lot of aspects.” he says. The cream of Holland’s techno scene soon followed suit, with his worked snapped up by 2000 And One’s Remote Area and 100% Pure, Shinedoe’s Intacto and Secret Cinema’s Gem Records and further afield by Germany’s Great Stuff and Tiga’s Turbo. Remixes for Paul Weller, Armand van Helden, Nic Fanciulli, Marc Romboy, Monika Kruse, Mauro Picotto, DJ Sneak and Umek and many others came. Eventually in 2012 he set up his own labels, Say What? Recordings and collaboration label Aella Music (which he runs together with Hermanez) to proliferate his sound further. With tinges of his Latin background lacing his percussion sections and his Dutch/Belgian heritage providing the basis for his hard-grooving techno template, his sound is one that mixes organic, tribal rhythm and syncopation and electronic machinations to potent effect. Ramon Tapia is a humble man enjoying his dream job. He just wants to carry on doing what he does best with no hyperbole, egomania or bullshit: rocking dancefloors and releasing infallible grooves. “I want to take Say What? Recordings to the next level, do some big collabs, just enjoy my work and let the music I make and DJ speak.”

Dave Clarke is a DJ with an anarchist streak a mile wide and punk in his soul. Technologically, he’s an early adopter with the studio to prove it, but he also embraces sounds outside the staunch electronic dance remit, from Nick Cave to Savages to old favourites Bauhaus. Such music informs his attitude as, using Serato on a 13” Macbook Pro Retina for his ruthlessly effective, fat-free club sets, he pushes the worldwide boundaries of what techno and electro can be. After a break , recent years have seen him make his presence as a producer felt again, working with Dutch partner Mr Jones (Jonas Uittenbosch) as _Unsubscribe_ and dropping remixes ranging from John Foxx’s seminal synth-pop gem ‘Underpass’ to Gesaffelstein, Detroit Grand Pubas and Octave One. Not a week passes when he doesn’t live up to his nickname, the Baron of Techno, a moniker given him by the late, great BBC Radio DJ John Peel. “I still love DJing with a passion,” Clarke enthuses, “Keeping a balance with technology so it doesn’t take over. Anything in a DJ set-up has to provide something extra, as opposed to being there as smoke and mirrors. There’s too much of that sort of thing going on, especially since the American EDM explosion...” Dave Clarke was born and raised in Brighton, England, but currently resides in Amsterdam in the Netherlands. The offspring of a technology loving father and a disco-soul loving mother, it was always evident that Clarke would cut a swathe through music. As a youth he ran away from home, sleeping in car parks and on beaches. He took lousy jobs in shoe shops, living off £5 a day, to subsidise his income from badly paid local DJ gigs - anything to further his involvement with music. “I didn't really engage at all with the outside world,” he recalls, “I was your typical disenfranchised JD Salinger-inspired young adult that used to hide in and behind music.” Clarke’s debut release was in 1990 on XL, around the time the label was launching The Prodigy. He used the name Hardcore, a guise he then took to the legendary Belgian techno-rave imprint R&S where he released various EPs (some as Directional Force). By 1992 Clarke’s own label, Magnetic North, was on the rise and he unveiled the classic ‘Alkaline 3dh’ (as Fly By Wire), among others. A next level career boost was round the corner when his ‘Red’ trilogy were unleashed in 1994. These catapulted Clarke into a different league and he suddenly found himself remixing the likes of Kevin Saunderson’s Inner City, The Chemical Brothers, New Order, Depeche Mode, Moby, Leftfield and Underworld. Undisputed landmarks in techno, DJ Mag rightly incorporated ‘Red’ in its All Time Techno Top 100 list. Clarke’s debut album ‘Archive One’ followed, flecked with hints of breakbeat and electronica, a novelty in the puritanical techno scene of the time. Clarke’s mix CDs include the techno/electro double ‘World Service’ outings, one of which sold nearly 100,000 and made it into Resident Advisor’s top ten mix compilations of the 21st century. He briefly signed to Skint Records resulting in 2004’s ‘Devil’s Advocate’ album, jammed with dark techno energy but laced with hip hop beats. When his production pace ebbed, Music Man Records gathered together ‘Remixes & Rarities’ in 2007, making Album Of The Month in Mixmag and receiving critical plaudits all over. As a DJ, Clarke plays out most weekends across Europe and the world. There’s the same attention to detail each time, his sets swooping whip-smart along the cutting blade of techno and electro, backed up by a seasoned bag of DJ tricks in which his early hip hop roots clearly show. Aptly nicknamed The Man In Black, Clarke blends into the background upon arrival and lets his music do the talking. That’s where he comes alive, where skills honed for years blow venues apart. It might seem from appearances that Clarke is not enjoying what he does but don’t let the grumpy image fool you. He loves every minute of it and feels humbled and blessed he’s able to do what he does. Whatever the scale of the venue, from small, sweaty clubs to venues such as Fabric, Fuse or Berghain, Clarke nurtures an extraordinary relationship with the crowd. It’s the same with festivals. He’s played Awakenings, I Love Techno, Lowlands, Pukkelpop, Glastonbury and Nature One, and developed a special relationship with Tomorrowland where he has his own stage. Here he has showcased names such as Green Velvet, Chris Liebing, Jeff Mills and Ben Klock. Clarke also continues to be an absolutely key player in the Amsterdam Dance Event where his Dave Clarke Presents event at Melkweg has sold out consecutive years running. As well as _Unsubscribe_ , whose debut single ‘Spek Hondje’, featuring vocals from Chicago house b-boy Bear Who, appeared in 2013 on Rob Booth’s Houndstooth label, Dave Clarke also reappeared as a solo producer, electro-revamping ‘These Days Are Mine’ by Manchester band I Am Kloot. The year also saw a re-release for ‘Red 2’’s ‘Wisdom To The Wise’ on Boysnoize Records, with remixes by Boys Noize, Marcel Dettman, Steve Rachmad and A.Mochi. Early 2014 sees Dave remix of Marcel Fengler coming out on the legendary Ostgut Ton label. And then there’s White Noise, Clarke's weekly radio show, a global institution and an indicator of where the scene is headed, going out on 40 stations worldwide (this year he celebrated his 400th edition live in the 2fm Studio in Dublin). Here Clarke casts light on aspiring producers he discovers in his Soundcloud Dropbox alongside more established artists. “I’ve never been interested in what’s trendy and what’s not,” Clarke explains, “but the best music comes to me every single day and I want to share it.” His affiliation with technology makes him the perfect ambassador for brands such as Denon, Oyaide, Soundtoys and French gear manufacturer Arturia, as these are the tools of his trade. Deep down, however, Dave Clarke continues to buck predictability and to do his own thing. He flies the flag for true techno spirit, pushing cutting edge sounds alongside a consistency of vision and purpose rare in the ever-changing world of dance music. In short, Dave Clarke might be established, but he will never be establishment.

Eelke Kleijn is a rare talent. With work stretching across movie trailer scores, deep live shows and incredibly well formed production, he crosses a boundary from electronic producer and in to a true modern day composer. With peers and tastemakers standing up for this unmistakable imagination, the Rotterdam based music maker’s potential has no bounds. With 2 artist albums delivered, an array of originals and first class remixes what he has achieved thus far would be any DJ’s reverie. Ultra to EMI, Global Underground to 3 Beat Records and Spinnin’ to Sudbeat have seen the young Dutchman’s vision in productions become world heard. With each record distinct but all out floor fillers, they have been pumped out in his epic sets from Argentina to Netherlands and Australia to the UK. Furthering his cinematic endeavours, Eelke released his bootleg for The Hunger Games song ‘The Hanging Tree’ by James Newton Howard featuring leading lady Jennifer Lawrence. Having also built a new studio last year, Eelke spent much of his time creating new music leading up to the launch of his new imprint DAYS like NIGHTS in 2017.

Cohesion Radio

Simon McCann took influence from Plymouth's Dance Scene after frequenting many venues in his youth and listening to national and international radio shows. It was here he decided Trance music was for him and although he was influenced by the more commercial sounds, he found the more nights he attended in the city the more underground, yet broader his taste became. Taking to mixing at the rather late age of 22, his tastes have developed to the stage where he has played Trance for many years and it was after a friends encouragement at a house party that he submitted a mix into the Liquid Pulse DJ Competition in 2013, which he won. Since winning the competition in 2013 Simon has played at Ministry Of Sound in London, Volksfest and this year he made in debut in Ibiza. He has also started producing trance and has had his first three singles 'One Day', 'Black Moon' and 'The Unknown' all signed to leading trance imprint Discover. Amassing DJ support worldwide with Paul Van Dyk, Giuseppe Ottaviani, Alex M.O.R.P.H giving the thumbs up on his productions, Simon has recently launched the Cohesion event brand which has brought Dave Pearce, Judge Jules, Public Domain, Lee Haslam and others to his home town. 'Cohesion Radio' seemed the logical step and launched in January 2017, which is already being syndicated worldwide both on FM stations and digitally. Expect to hear a lot more from Simon McCann in 2017!
